FPF updates AI and Workplace Assessment Technologies Guide

The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) has updated its artificial intelligence (AI) in employment best practices guide. Developed in partnership with leading HR, payroll, and software providers including Dayforce, LinkedIn, UKG, Workday, and Beamery, the revised framework addresses the widespread deployment of generative AI and autonomous agentic systems in workplace workflows.

The original guide, released in September 2023, categorised employment use cases as strictly low or high risk. The updated guidance introduces a scalable risk assessment framework tailored to an AI system's functionality and intended use. The FPF emphasises that risk depends on context and configuration, highlighting four key factors that elevate risk: data sensitivity, degree of autonomy, proximity to decision-making, and the significance of the potential impact on individuals.

The framework advises organisations to evaluate systems along a risk spectrum rather than relying on a single determinative factor. Systems that handle sensitive data, operate with higher autonomy, or contribute directly to consequential decisions, such as employee termination, require heightened guardrails, robust transparency, auditability, and meaningful human oversight to ensure compliance and responsible AI governance.
