AI personalisation and personality risk analysis
27/08/2025 | Future of Privacy Forum
The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) has published a new analysis on the differences between personalisation and personality in artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The report explains that while both features can enhance the engagement of AI tools, they pose distinct risks that require different governance approaches.
Personalisation refers to AI systems that adapt to a user's preferences and behaviours, while personality involves giving an AI human-like traits, communication styles, or a backstory. The FPF notes that a lack of clear distinction between the two in policy discussions can be problematic. As such, the analysis aims to help policymakers and practitioners understand the unique uses, benefits, and risks of each concept to better manage potential harms, such as delusional behaviour and the misuse of sensitive data.
