GPA attendees sign joint statement on trustworthy data governance for AI
18/09/2025 | French DPA
Representatives from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and nineteen other data protection authorities (DPA), including those from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland and Italy, have signed a joint statement aimed at building trustworthy data governance for artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative, initially launched in February, was formally reaffirmed at the 47th Global Privacy Assembly in Seoul.
The statement acknowledges both the opportunities and risks posed by AI, such as concerns over data protection, bias, and disinformation. To ensure AI complies with current legal frameworks, the signatories committed to clarifying the legal bases for data processing by AI, establishing appropriate security measures, and strengthening cooperation with other competent authorities. The DPAs advocate for incorporating data protection principles by design and establishing robust data governance to manage risks, noting the growing complexity of data processing by AI.
In related news, a LinkedIn post by the ICO highlights the key points raised by Information Commissioner John Edwards' speech on the ICO's AI and biometrics strategy, including aspects of its forthcoming statutory code of practice on AI and automated decision-making, the latest tech horizons report on Agentic AI, due later this year, and how the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 (DUA Act) clarifies rules to automatic decision-making.
