UK investigating plan to sell NHS patient data

31/12/2024 | Financial Times

UK officials are exploring how to price NHS patient data as part of proposals to create a “national health data service.” The initiative aims to streamline a complicated process involving selling anonymised health information to companies and researchers.

A review led by Cathie Sudlow calling for a centralised system to manage and store patient data is gaining support from various government departments. However, concerns about pricing and potential profiteering from patient data remain. Sudlow stressed the importance of transparent cost models that benefit patients and the public rather than simply generating revenue for the government. While the data would remain anonymised, public trust could be jeopardised if it seems like the NHS is selling data for profit. A recent NHS survey indicated that 50% of people were worried about their data being sold without consent.
