Quantum encrypted message sent over telecoms network

Scientists have achieved a data security milestone by sending encrypted messages using quantum physics techniques over a 250km German commercial telecommunications network. Toshiba Europe researchers utilised quantum key distribution (QKD) cryptography to transfer messages safely over traditional communication systems. QKD uses quantum entanglement, where two subatomic particles' characteristics are linked even across great distances. Measuring data from one particle reveals information about the other, allowing them to function as keys for exchanging coded messages that are indecipherable to outsiders. The researchers successfully sent these quantum messages using standard optical fibre without the need for specialised ultra-low temperature cooling equipment. Robert Woodward, the leader of Toshiba Europe's fibre QKD research team, believes this breakthrough opens the door for quantum technologies to move from the lab to practical networks.
