Lure of customer databases at heart of trio of retail cyberattacks

01/05/2025 | Financial Times

In less than a week, three of the UK's most recognisable retail brands, Marks & Spencer, the Co-op, and now Harrods, have all been targeted by cyberattacks, with varying levels of disruption.

The incidents highlight the vulnerabilities of retail companies and their vast customer databases, which face increasing cybersecurity threats and the urgent need for robust cyber resilience.

M&S is still unable to accept online orders and has reportedly paused hiring as the disruption continues. Meanwhile, the Co-op has been forced to shut down parts of its IT system. Harrods has also had to withdraw access to some systems, although customer-facing online services and its flagship store remain operational.

All three retailers are working with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
