44 European CEOs call for 2-year AI Act delay

03/07/2025 | Financial Times

The chief executive officers (CEOs) from 44 major European companies, including Airbus, BNP Paribas, Carrefour and Philips, are urging the European Commission to pause its landmark Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). In an open letter to President Ursula von der Leyen, the CEOs are calling for a two-year delay, warning that the AI Act's unclear and overlapping regulations jeopardise Europe's competitiveness in the global AI race.

The letter argues that the complex rules threaten the development of European AI champions and the ability of industries to deploy AI at the scale needed for global competition. This pressure comes as the EU considers watering down key elements of the law, which is due to enter into force in August.
