ETSI publishes baseline AI cybersecurity standard
30/01/2026 | European Telecommunications Standards Institute
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has released its baseline cybersecurity standards for organisations implementing artificial intelligence. Recognising that AI systems possess unique characteristics compared to traditional software, the ETSI EN 304 223 V2.1.1 standard provides targeted security requirements to combat emerging threats such as data poisoning, model obfuscation, and indirect prompt injection.
The framework organises security provisions into five distinct lifecycle phases: secure design, development, deployment, maintenance, and end-of-life. This structured approach aims to provide stakeholders throughout the AI supply chain with clear baseline requirements for protecting systems from initial creation through to retirement. The standard serves as an important document for ensuring the cybersecurity resilience of AI technologies as they become increasingly embedded in public life and business operations.
