EU Parliament Committee adopts child safety measures report

The European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) voted to adopt a report highlighting concerns over the failures of major online platforms to adequately protect minors from risks, including addiction, mental health harm, and illegal content exposure. MEPs supported developing privacy-preserving age assurance systems, but cautioned that platforms remain responsible for ensuring safety by design. The report also proposes an EU-wide minimum age of 16 for access to social media, video-sharing platforms, and AI companions, unless parental authorisation is given, with a minimum age of 13 for any social media access.
