European Commission renews UK adequacy decisions

19/12/2025 | European Commission

On 19 December 2025, the European Commission renewed its two 2021 adequacy decisions with the UK. The move allows for the continued free flow of personal data from the EU to the UK under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Law Enforcement Directive for a further six-year period.

The new decisions continue to be subject to a sunset clause, meaning they will remain valid until 27 December 2031, with the possibility of a further renewal. The Commission and the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) will formally review these decisions after four years.
