European Commission publishes AI transparency guidelines

The European Commission has published new guidelines clarifying the scope of transparency obligations for providers and deployers of AI systems under Article 50 of the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act).
Alongside providers and deployers of AI services, the guidelines offer practical advice for competent authorities.
Under the rules, organisations must inform users whenever they are interacting with an AI system, clearly label AI-generated content, and notify individuals if they are exposed to facial recognition tools.
The Commission states that these obligations aim to promote trust and integrity in the information ecosystem: "People should know when they are interacting with AI or exposed to AI-generated content. This will help them make informed decisions, calibrate their trust and reliance on AI and avoid misinformation or deception."
The transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026.
