OpenAI introduces predictive age feature to protect children

21/01/2026 | Euronews

OpenAI has introduced an age prediction system for ChatGPT to enhance safety for younger users amidst increasing regulatory scrutiny. The technology estimates whether a user is under 18 by analysing account longevity, login times, and interaction patterns.

Once a user is identified as a minor, the platform automatically activates stringent protections against graphic, violent, sexual, and self-harm content. It also restricts access to viral social media challenges that promote risky behaviour. OpenAI stated that this approach is informed by child development experts and academic research. While under-18s retain the ability to use the chatbot for learning and creativity, the system aims to provide a more age-appropriate environment without requiring formal identity documentation at the point of interaction.
