EU standards body announces delays to AI Act technical standards

The development of technical standards to help companies demonstrate compliance with the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) is behind schedule, according to CEN-CENELEC, an organisation consisting of 34 national standardisation bodies within European countries tasked by the European Commission to develop the standards. 

The standards, which would enable manufacturers to demonstrate that their artificial intelligence (AI) products and processes are safe, trustworthy, and compliant, were initially expected to be in place by August 2025. However, CEN-CENELEC has said that the work will likely extend into 2026 to ensure the standards reflect the latest technological advancements and achieve consensus among European stakeholders. Once the initial drafts are ready later this year, they will undergo mandatory editing rounds, assessment by the European Commission, and consultations and votes. This comprehensive process is "likely to take up much of 2025 and partly 2026 for some deliverables."
