EU Ombudsman opens EDPS complaint inquiry
01/09/2025 | Euronews
The EU Ombudsman has opened an inquiry into the European Commission's failure to respond to concerns about the appointment process for the next European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). The inquiry specifically relates to a complaint that raised a potential conflict of interest regarding one of the candidates, to which the Commission did not reply. The Ombudsman has given the Commission until 12 September to respond. The mandate of the current EDPS, Wojciech Wiewiórowski, expired last year, and the European Parliament and member states have since backed different candidates for the role, creating a standoff.
