Europol given new mandate for data processing

An agreement has been reached between the European Parliament and the Council, giving a new mandate to Europol. The new mandate provides the law enforcement agency with a legal basis for storing and processing vast amounts of personal data, practices already in place that the European Data Protection Supervisor investigated and deemed Europol's practices unlawful. The European Commission released a statement following the agreement. The EDPS has also published remarks on the reforms at the LIBE committee on Europol.
