EU and US open dialogue over enforcement of DMA, DSA

The European Commission has confirmed it is engaged in tech discussions with US officials following reports that Washington may be granted influence over the enforcement of EU digital regulations. The talks aim to establish a dialogue to reinforce cooperation on digital technologies and markets, clarify misunderstandings, and address global challenges. The move follows significant political pressure from the US administration, which has previously linked the lowering of trade tariffs to changes in European tech rules.
While the Commission maintains that its primary legislative frameworks, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA), are not up for negotiation, reports suggest a potential compromise to involve the US in how the EU enforces competition and platform rules against American companies. In exchange, the US would reportedly lower tariffs on European machinery, vehicles, steel, and aluminium.
Such an arrangement could allow Brussels to grant Washington greater influence without formally weakening legislation, as the Commission possesses significant discretion over which cases to investigate and the severity of enforcement.
