EU vote on Chat Control proposal set for 12 September faces uncertainty

European Member States are set to finalise their positions on a proposed regulation to force the scanning of private messages, known as Chat Control, which is aimed at combating child sexual abuse material (CSAM). While the Danish Presidency of the EU Council has pushed for the measure, opposition is growing across the EU. According to news reports, six Member States are on record as opposing the proposal, while others, including Germany, are undecided.
In the European Parliament, opposition to the measure is growing across various political groups, including those from the Greens/EFA VOLT and Patriots for Europe, with members stating that protecting children online is possible "without mass surveillance."
A vote is scheduled on 12 September.
