Report examines benefits of federated learning to train AI models

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and Spain's data protection authority (DPA) have published a detailed report examining the role that federated learning can play in supporting artificial intelligence (AI) models to protect personal data. The report concludes that federated learning allows multiple sources of data to train a shared AI model while keeping data decentralised. This approach mitigates data protection risks as personal data remains locally, which is beneficial in scenarios where data sensitivity or regulatory requirements make data centralisation impractical.
