EDPS publishes EU-US immigration data sharing framework opinion
17/09/2025 | EDPS
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has published an Opinion on a proposed EU-US framework for exchanging personal information for security screenings. The arrangement would allow Member States to enter into bilateral agreements with the United States as a requirement for the Visa Waiver Program.
While acknowledging border security as a legitimate aim, EDPS Wojciech Wiewiórowski warned that the proposed data sharing poses a serious interference with fundamental data protection and privacy rights. The supervisor stressed the critical importance of providing comprehensive and effective safeguards for all individuals, regardless of their nationality or residence, to protect their rights and freedoms.
