EDPS issues Opinion on United Nations Convention against Cybercrime

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has issued an Opinion on a proposed United Nations Convention against Cybercrime. While acknowledging that international cooperation is a legitimate goal, the EDPS warned that the convention must not weaken the data protection and privacy rights guaranteed under EU law.

The EDPS emphasised that when implementing the convention, EU Member States must ensure that any personal data transfers to third countries fully comply with EU data protection laws and international human rights obligations. The EDPS recommended that the effects of the convention be carefully assessed in practice and that data protection experts be involved in future reviews.
