EDPS issues EU Entry Exit System press release
24/10/2025 | EDPS
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has issued a press release on the new EU Entry Exit System (EES), which entered into operation on 12 October 2025. Designed to prevent irregular migration and enhance security in the Schengen area, the automated system registers third-country travellers, recording personal data such as name, date of birth, biometric data, and dates of entry and exit. The gradual deployment will replace passport stamping, with European countries initially registering travellers at 10% of border crossings, aiming for full registration within six months.
Oversight of the EES is the responsibility of the Coordinated Supervision Committee (CSC), comprising national supervisory authorities and the EDPS. The EDPS is specifically responsible for auditing the security architecture and communication network managed by eu-LISA, the agency operating the system. EDPS Wojciech Wiewiórowski stressed that effective supervision is crucial given the sensitivity of the personal data processed, stating that individuals must be able to effectively exercise their fundamental data protection rights.
