EDPS calls for stronger CSAM detection safeguards

16/02/2026 | EDPS

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has issued an Opinion on a European Commission proposal to extend interim regulations aimed at preventing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). While the EDPS acknowledges that child sexual abuse is a "particularly serious and heinous crime," the regulator has called on co-legislators to correct fundamental flaws in the current interim framework.

The EDPS highlighted two primary concerns: the lack of a clear legal basis for processing personal data and the absence of robust safeguards to prevent the general and indiscriminate scanning of digital communications. The EDPS also stressed that any such measures must adhere to the principles of necessity and proportionality.
