EDPB release statement on European Police Cooperation Code

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has released its opinion on the proposed European Police Cooperation Code. While the EDPB recognises police collaboration is essential to ensuring safety across member states, it noted that "automated searching of biometric data or police records should not be possible in relation to all criminal offences." In addition, the EDPB is concerned the proposed European Police Records Index System doesn't sufficiently justify "why the envisaged cross-border access to police records is necessary, nor provides sufficient safeguards to be implemented."
