During its latest plenary session, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) adopted new guidelines on the processing of personal data for scientific research purposes. To qualify as scientific research under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), activities should be assessed against six criteria, including following a methodical and systematic approach, adherence to ethical standards, verifiability and transparency, autonomy and independence, objectives of the research, and the potential to expand or apply scientific knowledge.

The board also set up a team to accelerate the development of new anonymisation guidelines, and adopted two opinions concerning the Europrivacy certification criteria.
