EDPB calls for cross-regulatory information sharing legal basis

During a high-level meeting in Dublin on 16–17 July, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) called on the European Commission to establish a clear legal basis for cross-regulatory information sharing. The EDPB emphasised that effective cooperation and information exchange, including confidential data, between regulators in adjacent fields is increasingly essential under EU law.

The EDPB also addressed efforts to support consistent application of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and deepen cooperation among data protection authorities (DPAs). Despite reporting significant progress on cross-border enforcement in July 2024, national authorities face a growing number of complex data protection complaints, driven in part by the expanded use of artificial intelligence (AI). The surge is placing heavy strain on limited resources, affecting DPAs' ability to perform their statutory duties efficiently.

To address these challenges, especially in cases affecting large numbers of people, the EDPB discussed practical and legislative solutions. These include pooling resources to support lead DPAs and holding enforcement procedure workshops to exchange best national practices.
