EDPB adopts guidelines for GDPR fine calculation, law enforcement facial recognition use

The European Data Protection Board has adopted guidance for calculating EU General Data Protection Regulation fines and the use of facial recognition technology by law enforcement during its 12 May plenary session. The guidance for fines seeks to harmonise the methodologies of EU data protection authorities in a five-step calculation scheme based on the nature of a violation, its seriousness, and the organisation's size. In relation to the law enforcement's use of facial recognition, the EDPB guidance documents that uses should be according to the EU Law Enforcement Directive while repeating its proposal for a ban on facial recognition tech.
