Beverley Bryant, a strategic advisor in the frontline digitisation team at NHS England, highlighted the critical role of two-factor authentication in preventing cyber attacks during the Health Excellence Through Technology (HETT) conference. Bryant, who previously served as joint chief digital information officer at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, emphasised that two-factor authentication is a crucial deterrent to enhance cyber resilience and minimise the risk of attacks in the health and care sector.
Bryant's remarks came in the wake of the ransomware attack on pathology lab services provider Synnovis earlier in the year, which led to several hospitals and GP surgeries in London facing severe challenges in providing healthcare services. Reflecting on the attack, Bryant described the three months of disruption as "unbelievable" and suggested that implementing two-factor authentication could have potentially averted the cyberattack.
