Irish Data Protection Commission publishes 2024 annual report

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has published its 2024 annual report. The report highlights that the DPC issued 11 final decisions with administrative fines totalling €652 million and imposed multiple reprimands and compliance orders. During the period, the largest fine of €310 million was issued to LinkedIn for three separate violations related to targeted advertising GDPR non-compliance.
During the period, the DPC received 11,091 new cases from individuals, concluding 10,510 cases, with 2,673 progressing to formal complaint handling. The DPC resolved 2,357 escalated complaints.
The DPC's report not only addresses its performance during the period but also its future resource needs as its responsibilities and workload continue to grow, particularly with the implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) and other digital regulations. In this context, the DPC highlights the importance of receiving increased funding to facilitate workforce expansion.

Alongside the publication of its annual report, the DPC released the results of its 2025 Public Attitudes Survey.
The survey indicates that 75% of respondents support data protection compliance, even if it results in delays to new technologies. Additionally, 66% would lose trust in organisations that misuse personal data, while only 4% said it would make no difference.
Other findings include 77% of respondents are concerned about the processing and sharing of children's data, while 61% worry about the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
