Irish Data Protection Commission publishes 2023 annual report

On Wednesday, 29 May 2024, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) published its 2023 annual report. The report highlights that the DPC issued 19 final decisions with administrative fines totalling €1.55 billion and imposed multiple reprimands and compliance orders. Among the 19 final decisions, the largest fine of €1.2 billion awarded to Meta relates to the conclusion of a long-running investigation concerning the transfer of personal data from the EU/EEA to the US for its Facebook service.

The report reveals that the DPC received a 20% increase in cases from individuals in 2023 compared to the previous year and that the regulator resolved 3,218 complaints through its formal complaint-handling process. The DPC also received 156 cross-border complaints.
