Meta calls for stronger surveillance-for-hire laws

In the past 12 months, Meta has banned at least seven companies engaged in surveillance-for-hire activities on Facebook. Nathaniel Gleicher, the Head of Security Policy at Meta, said global democracies should pass legislation to criminalise companies for making commercial spyware software. In addition, Meta provided 13 recommendations to regulate surveillance-for-hire, which include "banning the sale of surveillance software, establishing institutions to help victims seek legal recourse and using export control lists to limit the availability of surveillance technologies."
