Council of Europe calls for strict facial recognition regulations

The Council of Europe has called for a strict set of regulations covering facial recognition technologies, including bans for specific applications, to prevent privacy and data protection risks. The council published a set of guidelines for governments, developers, businesses and others, stating that the use of facial recognition to detect an individual’s skin colour, sex, personality traits and more should be prohibited. The guidelines also state facial recognition use by private companies in uncontrolled environments, like shopping centres, should not be allowed.
