Complaint accuses European Commission of rigging EDPS appointment
11/07/2025 | Computer Weekly
The European Commission has been accused of manipulating the selection process for the next European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) in favour of its own candidate. A complaint submitted to the European Ombudsman by privacy experts Maria Farrell, Douwe Korff, and Ian Brown alleges "procedural irregularities," including a lack of transparency regarding selection criteria and committee identities. They claim the shortlisting of Bruno Gencarelli, a Commission official involved in data transfer deals with the UK and US, violates the independence requirement for the role. Ian Brown warned that imposing Commission staff into independent oversight roles could be disastrous for the independence of EU institutions.
