CJEU clarifies right to information about indirect personal data collection

On Thursday, 28 November 2024, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) issued a judgment in Case C-169/23 about the right to information when personal data has not been obtained directly from the data subject. The case originates from a complaint about the lack of data protection information provided concerning COVID-19 vaccination certificates. The CJEU found that Article 14(5)(c) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provides an exception to the controller's obligation to provide information to the data subject, irrespective of the source.
