Ransomware attacks surge 50% as payments fall by 8%
02/03/2026 | Chainanalysis
The latest research from Chainalysis indicates that total on-chain ransomware payments fell by 8% to £615.8 million ($820 million) in 2025, despite a 50% increase in claimed attacks. Although aggregate revenue stagnated, the median ransom payment rose by 368% year-over-year to nearly £45,057 ($60,000).
The report highlights a convergence in cybercrime infrastructure, with financially motivated criminals and state-linked actors utilising the same proxy networks and hosting providers to evade detection. In response, law enforcement and private-sector disruption efforts shifted focus in 2025. Rather than solely targeting individual groups, these actions increasingly focused on dismantling the underlying hosting services and malware tools that support the wider ecosystem.
