LinkedIn study involving unknowing users altered hiring prospects

A five-year LinkedIn study involving 20 million users could have resulted in fewer job opportunities for some unknowing participants. The study conducted by LinkedIn, Harvard, MIT and Stanford tested the theory that more people are hired through "distant acquaintances" compared to close contacts. The research identified that users who were shown contacts with whom they had ten mutual friends doubled their chances of being hired. The study raises ethical questions because some users would have been unlikely to consent to such an experiment.
