BBW issues warning over financial surveillance as Lords debate DPDI Bill

Digital rights group Big Brother Watch (BBW) has raised concerns over proposals within the Data Protection and Digital Information (DPDI) Bill that would give the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) powers to conduct financial surveillance of benefit recipients. BBW argues that such powers mark a troubling trend in surveillance powers, wherein the state views compromising millions of innocent people's privacy as a legitimate means to an end. While this trend was previously seen in the context of combating terrorism, it is now being extended to the maladministration of benefits.
