Jaguar Land Rover cyberattack lowers UK economic output by 0.17%

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) reported a heavy pre-tax loss of £485 million for the three months ending in September, down from a £398 million profit in the same period last year. The significant loss was largely attributed to a cyberattack in late August that forced JLR to shut down its highly automated production lines throughout September.

The attack, which severely disrupted car production and parts supply, resulted in a 24% drop in quarterly revenues to £4.9 billion. JLR also reported an additional £196 million in "cyber related costs" for external support. The production stoppage was so extensive that it drove UK car production in September to its lowest level since 1952 and reduced the UK's economic output by 0.17% for the month, turning modest GDP growth into a 0.1% contraction.

The crisis significantly affected JLR's supply chain, forcing many smaller businesses reliant on JLR orders to suspend operations. Production at the company has since returned to normal levels.
