Co-op confirms all 6.5m members had personal data stolen
16/07/2025 | BBC News
In an appearance on BBC Breakfast, Co-op chief executive Shirine Khoury-Haq confirmed that the personal data of all its 6.5 million members, including names, addresses, and contact information, was stolen in a cyberattack in April. While no financial data was compromised, Khoury-Haq expressed her devastation over the incident and its impact on both members and colleagues.
In response to the breach, Co-op is partnering with The Hacking Games, a cybersecurity recruitment company that identifies young talent and channels their skills into legal careers. The initiative, which includes a pilot programme with Co-op Academies Trust, aims to prevent future cybercrime by offering development and career opportunities, thereby diverting young people from illicit activities.
