Instagram to use AI to identify teens faking their age
21/04/2025 | Associated Press
On Monday, Meta announced that Instagram will begin testing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to identify users who may be misrepresenting their age on the platform. While Meta has used AI for age detection for some time, Instagram will now "proactively" identify accounts suspected of belonging to individuals who provided an incorrect birthdate during signup.
If the AI determines that a user has misrepresented their age, the account will automatically be converted to a teen account, which has more restrictive, private-by-default settings than adult accounts.
Meta explained that its AI is trained to analyse various signals to determine a user's age, including the type of content they interact with, their profile information, and the creation date of the account. This proactive approach aims to enhance safety and enforce age-appropriate restrictions for younger users on the platform.
