Call for Abstracts for Archives and Records Journal: Special issue -Data Protection and Privacy in Archives and Records Management.

Archives and Records Journal - Data Protection and Privacy in Archives and Records Management

The Archives & Records Association (ARA) are putting out a call for abstracts for a special issue within the Archives and Records Journal on Data Protection and Privacy. For this issue, ARA invites scholars and practitioners to submit papers which reflect on the impact of data protection on archives and records.

In the first instance, please submit a 500-word (maximum) proposal to: petermonteith1@hotmail.com, by 31 July 2025

Proposals should contain a brief outline of the proposed article, up to five keywords, a title and author affiliations.

The boundaries between information professions are often blurred, and this is especially true where data protection is concerned. While cross-disciplinary submissions are welcome, there should be a clear connection to archives or records management.

We are calling for abstracts for papers covering topics such as, but not restricted to:

  • Archiving in the public interest
  • Data protection principles, including transparency
  • Rights of data subjects
  • Human rights
  • Do the deceased have any rights?
  • Data protection vs privacy vs confidentiality
  • Implementing privacy: the relationship between privacy and legislation
  • The globalisation of the concept of privacy: an opportunity to implement consistent standards of privacy or create multiple interpretations?
  • Maintaining privacy in an ever-changing technological landscape
  • Data protection and retention periods
  • Special category data
  • Access to closed collections
  • AI and personal data, risks and opportunities
  • Challenges posed in relation to specific types of collection
  • Risk
  • Training and knowledge sharing
  • Codes of practice
  • Relationship between GDPR and related legislation
  • Cross-border working and the changing landscape
  • Legislative changes, potential benefits and missed opportunities
  • Avoiding accidental disclosure
  • Managing false/inaccurate personal data in archives
  • Adapting to changing legislation.
  • Submission Instructions

Articles should be no more than 8,000 words (including endnotes and references) and written in accordance with the style guide and reference guide (Chicago endnotes and bibliography) provided by Archives and Records. Shorter papers may be considered, or authors may be encouraged to collaborate if they submit similar proposals.

For an informal discussion about publishing in the special issue, please contact Peter Monteith.
