Cyber security breaches survey 2023

19/04/2023 | UK Government

The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has released the Cyber security breaches survey 2023.

The latest government statistics indicate that 32% of businesses and 24% of charities reported data breach incidents or cyberattacks over the past 12 months, down from 39% and 30% in 2022. A closer look at the data reveals the numbers are comparable except for smaller businesses, suggesting that they consider cyber security a lower priority in the current economic climate. However, less monitoring also points to lower levels of breach detection.

The average total cost of the most disruptive breach or attack from the last 12 months is £4,960, up from £4,200 in 2022.

The full report includes detailed statistics on:

  • Identification of cyber security breaches and attacks,
  • Cyber hygiene,
  • Risk management and supply chains,
  • Board engagement and corporate governance,
  • Cyber accreditations and following guidance,
  • Incident response,
  • Cyber crime

Overall, the study highlights many areas where improvements are needed to become more resilient to cyberattacks.
