EU-US data transfer talks progressing

Discussions regarding a potential replacement for the EU-US Privacy Shield have ramped up. People familiar with negotiations said EU and US officials are making progress on their data transfer dilemma ahead of an upcoming meeting between the two sides at the end of September. A key talking point is providing Europeans with a mechanism to challenge potential US government surveillance.  In related news, Politico reports that the French National Cybersecurity Agency Director-General has called for US authorities to stop accessing data stored in Europe by US cloud companies. Europe needs “a rule that only European law is applicable on cloud products certified in Europe” for services like health care and finance. “This is not about turning our backs on partners. But it’s about having the courage to say that we don’t want non-European law to apply to these services.”
