EU Council adopts collective redress for consumers draft directive

The Council of the European Union has announced it adopted its position on the draft directive for representative actions related to the protection of consumers' collective interests. The directive obliges member states to put in place a system of representative actions while empowering designated qualified entities to seek injunctions and redress on a variety of matters, including data protection. The European Parliament should approve the council's position at first reading before the end of the year, and all EU member states will adopt the directive by 2022.
